So, I am 18, i've been smoking on and off for three years...

the past 3 months i've smoked at least 10 cigarettes a day.

Now l have surgery this upcoming Thursday, l had a smoke about 10 minutes ago, and i'm reading all this junk now about how smoking can cause complications from the anesthesia and i'm FREAKED OUT

l had my pre-op the other day and my mom was in the room and l said l did not smoke, but l meet with the anesthesiologist the day of my surgery and i'm going to tell him/her that l do smoke...

and for the next two days i'm not going to smoke at all... but l heard that can make things worse...

AHH i'm stressing out, will l be okay?

You will be ok, l have had several surgeries and l smoke. l do think it is a good idea to lay off until you've recovered.or quit all together!

Do not worry l smoke and have been through it all. l actually smoked before l went in for the operation and l slept very well. Woke up with my arm split in two and stitches and staples all over. Left the same night on morphine and on foot. Smoked as soon as l hit the door. Take care buddy.

Well, as u already know smoking is not healthy so l am not going to lecture u about not smoking. But if at all possible, l would try to slow down on the smoking.not just before the surgery but permanently. But as far as the anesthesia, l would definately tell the
anesthesiologist that u smoked. They need to be prepared to handle any complication that may occur, but that does not mean that there will be a complication. So try not to stress, stress can raise ur blood pressure & that is not good. A nurse once told me that when someone has a reaction to medicine or in this case anesthesia, they have to list it as a warning. It does not mean that it will happen to anyone else. They just have to let others know that it happened to someone else. But please let ur anesthesiologist & doctor know that u do smoke.

l am 24 years old, & l have been smoking 5 cigarillo is a day for the past 7 years. l had my Gallbladder out just recently, & l was freaking out too!!!

Long story short, l expressed my concerns in a private meeting with the guy who would put me out, & he said ''The young people r the worst & best patients in the world, cause they have the least likelyhood of having complications, but they r scared to death of surgeries''.

So l told him my concerns about my smoking, & he said ''We keep someone with u at all times, & will have someone looking after you, after the surgery, to make sure u wake up alright''

Well, what happened was, surgery went great, but afterwards, l stopped breathing in the recovery room. The person standing next to me instantly woke me up, & all was good.

They stick a breathing tube down ur throat during surgery. They do not tell u this till that day, so here is the secret hehe.

And YES TELL THEM YOU Smoke, & DON'T QUIT Smoking cause what will happen, is ur lungs will start to sweat & flem & stuff occurs, it is all nasty. The only thing is though, is that u should smoke up till 8 hours of the surgery, then u shouldnt smoke at all. So really, go to bed (If u can, l know it is hard) & wake up, & skip ur morning cig.. l know it sucks.. l was off the walls & everything, freaking out, but once l was in the prep area, they gave me the best stuff in the world to calm down, & it was all better.

Tell them u want someone by ur side in the recovery, in case u stop breathing, & all is well.. l only stopped breathing cause l have sleep apnea or whatever it is called. l sometimes stop breathing & wake myself up.

Tell the doctor you smoke. You will be ok. They dont want you to smoke because smoking causes slower healing of your surgical wound and higher risk for infection.
