my father has hemochromitosis and it is in remission. lately he has been getting dizzy and coughing really bad at night. would he be comming out of remission or would he be getting something else?

haemochromatosis isnt a disorder that goes 'into remission' it is iron overload and he prob should have his iron studies rechecked if he hasnt had a venesection for a while..could be loads of other things causing those symptoms

l think u have ur conditions mixed up. C N is right. Haemochromatosis is a genetic disorder. It is a disorder: not a disease.

In terms of genetic make-up, u r either heterozygous (a carrier - do not technically have the disease but can pass it onto offspring if u have children with another carrier or someone with the disorder) or u r homozygous (have the full-blown version of the disorder). It is not comparable to cancer. It can cause cancer (of the pancreas, for example) from an overload of iron in the effected organs but it is not a cancer of itself.

If ur dad has the disease (homozygous), he would be having blood taken regularly (venesection).

He needs to see his doctor about the other symptoms.
