My sister had to avacuate Galveston Island due to huricane Ike.She lives across the street from the beach. She bought & paid for this house with her inheritance, recently. She lives on disability & is in the hospital w/pnuemonia.It is bad over there. They have released her & she is coughing up blood. They said her white blood cell count is getting better. The hospital is over crowded. She is a smoker but quit 3 months ago but has been smoking again with the huricane & all.Is it normal to cough up blood when you have pneumonia?

Unfortunately, that is possible, as pneumonia can cause necrosis of lung tissue. Main advice for her is if it is bacterial related pneumonia, keep on taking antibiotics as recommended by the doctors & to get rest. It is probably a good thing that she left the hospital anyhow. With so many people getting sick, it'd be pretty likely that she could have caught another infection from the hospital patients had she stayed. If she is still smoking, she needs to stop, unless she wants permanent lung scarring. Dropping white count is a good sign, means that the infection is being cleared away slowly.

Only if it is a little bit. There is a big difference between a small amount in comparison to a bucket load. l would guess it would be because of the slight tissue damage (Something along those lines anyway). However, pneumonia is always the coughing up of sputum (phlegm) from the lungs. In saying all this, l really believe you should get this checked by a professional.
