On july 8 a woman was given an antibiotic for sinusitis. Her condition worsened because of severe pain and tightness of the jaw.

On july 12 she was admitted to the hospital with severe facial spasm. She reported that on jul5, she incurred a puncture wound at the base of her great toe, cleaned the wound but did not seek medical attention.

Explain how the disease had occured even if the woman had taken an antibiotic.

My sister could so give u the answer to this, she is in nursing school & these r the questions she has to answer. In my opinion, just using common sense & no book knowledge l would say that she developed an infection from the puncture wound that was of a different strain than the sinusitis. Thus, the antibiotic prescribed being for the sinus infection, would not necessarily treat the toe puncture. One antibiotic does not treat all infections. You r in nursing school r not you? l will ask my sister tomorrow & see what she says. l will edit my answer for u then. Good luck with classes, they r tough!

Here is what my sister said. She said that the antibiotic will not treat tetnus (sp.?), which is what it appears to be. She needs a tetnus shot in order to treat the toe punture. Hope that helps!

She might be unimmunized to tetanus and if that is the case, oral antibiotic ( possibly with insufficient dose in this case) will not totally get rid of the bacteria.

It takes 3 days to 3 weeks of incubation before symptoms of tetanus (lockjaw) from the bacteria, Clostridium tetani, with a week being about average, hence july 5th to july 12th. A standard drug for sinusitis, like Augmentin, or Azithromycin, would not necessarily take out tetanus.
